Spiders
The Hobo Spider (see picture above) is one of the larger species at 1/4” to 2/3” in length. It has a chevron pattern or light stripe down its abdomen and is typically a shade of brown. The Hobo builds funnel shaped webs on the ground and prefers dark places under rocks and around building foundations. They can be aggressive when provoked and are venomous.
The European Cross Spider is probably the most common spider in the PNW. Cross Spiders build suspended and quite organized webs used to capture other flying insects. They are most commonly brown or orange with white dots on its back that come together to form the shape of a cross.
Spiders are solitary, reclusize and shy and will only act aggressive when provoked.
Treating suspended spiders is difficult as they will often blow in on a breeze from surrounding foliage. However, ground spiders like the Hobo Spider and Giant House Spider are best treated with a Perimeter Spray.
At Shrum’s Pest Control, our perimeter spray treatments are applied using a 25 gallon power sprayer mounted to the back of an all-terrain vehicle (ATV). We do not use hand sprayers for our perimeter spray treatments as our hand sprayers do not evenly and adequately apply products necessary to protect your home or place of business. A perimeter spray once or twice each year will not only control ground spiders, it will also control ants and other terrestrial insects around your home.
