Rats

Rodents (especially Rats) present a very real and formidable challenge for businesses. Rats will chew through wiring and damage property, plant and equipment. Rats also serve as outstanding vectors for transmittance of diseases because they can carry bacteria and viruses in their systems. At Shrum’s Pest Control we understand the impact rats can have on your reputation and on your bottom line. Our extensive experience in the Portland-Metro area managing prolific rodent populations in the Columbia and Willamette River systems will give you confidence in our ability to produce tangible results for your site(s).

Shrum’s Pest Control approaches all of our Rodent Control projects using a simple and effective program or methodology…

RECOGNIZE

What are we dealing with? This is the question Shrum’s Pest Control will answer first in order to make a professional recommendation and ultimately deliver an effective treatment to control rat populations at your location.

R.Rattus (Roof Rats) are omnivores but are also referred to as predators due to their diverse diet. They prefer seeds and grains but will eat birds, snails and insects. Roof rats can be much more selective about what they eat. This presents unique challenges for controlling their populations. They also prefer to live in trees and attics.

R. Norvegicus (Norway Rats), on the other hand, prefers to burrow into the ground and into crawlspaces and basements to nest and feed. They are larger and more aggressive than their tree top cousins and adapt well to most any local environment. Both reproduce rapidly.

ADDRESS

While professional application of different baiting and trapping methods and tactics are an important part of the overall eradication program, effective rodent management requires more. In many cases, our clients must take steps to address issues that are perpetuating an infestation onsite.

Foundations, vents and roofing may require repair in order to exclude rats from entering the location. Overgrown landscaping that is contacting the building may need attention. Eliminating a food source may be necessary. These are just a few examples of areas that may need to be addressed as we move forward with controlling rat populations at your location.

TREAT

Shrum’s Pest Control has commercial client relationships that span almost three (3) decades due to our proven ability to control rat populations in some of Portland-Metro’s most infested areas on the Columbia and Willamette River systems. Our treatments and rodent control tactics are effective.

Baiting requires that our baits be palatable, whether we are dealing with a Norway Rat or a hyper-selective Roof Rat. At Shrum’s Pest Control we use grain-based soft baits and never the more durable wax-based baits used by our many of our competitors. While this choice on our part requires that we monitor our bait stations more closely and frequently, the extra work pays off when rodents hit our bait stations consistently. We also mix our own proprietary blend of bait used for borrow-baiting Norway Rats. Another important factor for baiting is knowing when and when not to bait based on laws and the property being serviced. Discerning the difference will head off compliance violations for our clients and also prevent a need to deal with undesirable odors in walls and other inaccessible locations onsite.

If we cannot bait, we trap. Trapping boils down to observing travel patterns and nesting locations and then using our vast experience to effectively place our traps to be the most efficient possible.

SUSTAIN

When we begin working with new clients, the work we do with our new clients in the RECOGNIZE, ADDRESS and TREAT stages of the program can be described as a “Clean Out”. Our follow up monitoring of bait stations and traps will be more frequent the first month as we get on top of any existing rat infestations. As you (the customer) ADDRESS the issues perpetuating the rodent problem and our treatments begin to produce results, the program will move from “Clean Out” to an ongoing monthly SUSTAIN pattern of management where we have established a perimeter around the location and are effectively and efficiently keeping rats from re-establishing a presence at the property.
